Preventative health care at Croydon would not be complete without Dental Care. Dental disease is one of the most commonly diagnosed, health problems we see in companion animals.
Each year your pet should receive an oral examination as part of their annual wellness visit. A complete oral examination is necessary in identifying abnormalities and the level of your pets dental cleaning. In addition any teeth that require removal are identified.
A dental cleaning is a very important part of your pet’s health. Calculus build-up on teeth can lead to gingivitis (swelling and inflammation of the gums), periodontal disease (inflammation of the ligaments holding the teeth), tooth abscesses, and tooth loss. We also know that infections from the mouth can spread to other organs such as the kidneys, heart and liver.
A dental cleaning is a routine procedure performed under anesthesia. The teeth are first cleaned with an instrument called an ultrasonic scalar. This instrument removes calculus and microscopic plaque from the tooth surface. The teeth are then polished to a smooth finish. Lastly, we apply a sealant to the teeth, to help protect them from future plaque and calculus formation. After the dental, a staff member will instruct you on easy future care of your pet’s teeth.
